Shantaram the Magician and the Story of Brian and the Mysterious Clock

Brian worked at a small tech company making parts to sell to larger corporations around the world. He'd been at the company for30 years. He put down the piece of metal he was working on, and his boss called him into his office. Brain we have a gift for you, it's a clock, your 30 year anniversary gift for working at our company! There was a large box sitting on the middle of the floor in Brian's boss's office. "We'll have your clock delivered to you on Saturday."

Saturday arrived and Brian pulled the covers off of him, and raised his head and scooted to the side of the bed, and yawned. The door bell rang; he walked down the hall and greeted two men at the door.

"We have your clock here Brian." The cardboard box that was in Brian's boss's office was seen. The two men wheeled in the clock. "Where would you like your clock sir?"

"Oh just put it up against this wall here." The box was unloaded off of the dolly and placed against the wall. It took up half of the wall standing nearly five feet tall. The two men cut the cardboard box and un wrapped it from around a truly amazing clock. The clock was made up of oak wood, it had a picture on the front of it, and the picture resembled a woman swinging on a swing. The woman had long brown hair and was smiling in the picture. The bezel of the clock had roman numerals on it to represent the different hours of the day it was. There was a huge pendulum swinging back and forth, when it swung the pendulum shined in the room. This clock would be a great addition to his lonely house.

Brian went to work the next day. "You are so lucky that you got that clock, I can't wait until I get my clock." a younger man exclaimed.

"Well boy you've got many more years to go, you've only been at the company for three years," Brain smiled. The young man smiled back.

Brian was working on a cylinder shaped part that had a hole through it that would hold a bunch of wires in between it, to protect the wires from electric activity in a device. Brian finished with his work and drove home.

Brain was watching Tom Brokaw on NBC news, in the news it was showing people injured in the Iraq war. Brain turned off the television in disgust. It was a quarter to nine, and all of a sudden the clock started making music, it was playing "twinkle twinkle little star". The music sounded like music descended from a wind up jewelry box. Brian was excited that his clock made music. He walked over to the clock and stared at it. The Pendulum swung back and forth as "twinkle twinkle" played. The music stopped all of sudden and dinged nine times to signify that it was nine o'clock. The hour hand struck to the symbol "IX" on the clock. Brian yawned and crawled into bed to get up in the morning and go to work.

The next night at about 8:45 again the clock made another amazing melody, this time it was "row, row, row your boat". The music echoed through the house, Brian smiled as he loved his new clock. The amazing melodies continued for nearly 12 days, Brian was curious as to how or why the clock made this exquisite music. Brian went to work the next day, and walked into his boss's office. His boss was drinking coffee seated at a desk, reading the news paper. He wore a tie, which had a yellow and brown striped like design on it, and black docker pants, paired with a white button up the front shirt. "Hey Brian, how are ya doing?" asked the boss.

"Good replied Brain, thank you, it's about that clock, it makes music each night at exactly 8:45, and I don't understand why it makes this music."

"Brian, I have no idea about that clock, corporate just chooses a gift to give to the employees of the company that have been with the company for 30 years, and they chose to get you that clock."

Brian turned around to leave the building, his boss said "Brian, you are a great asset to our company thanks for spending your life with us."

Brian smiled at his boss, and continued to work.

20 years had gone by and Brian was now retired from his company. He had a routine of where he wanted to eat each and everyday, he didn't know how to cook, as he was a bachelor, and chose to eat at a set choice of restaurants routinely each and every day. He was at one of the restaurants he'd normally eat at, and there was a 19 year old boy making balloon animals. This fascinated Brian. The boy stood there with his red pants on, and red and a white striped hat on. He had a black bowtie on, was medium height and had freckles all over his face. He would walk around from table to table at the restaurant making balloon animals for the kids at the restaurant.

"Will you make me a poodle?" asked one of the delighted kids. The boy took an air device out of his pocket used to pump up the balloon, and worked some magic and transformed the balloon into a poodle. The little girl held out her hands side by side. He placed the balloon on the little girl's hands. "Thank you sir," she said, "Mommy look at the poodle I got," the little girl ran off to her mother and showed her the poodle she had just gotten made out of a balloon.

Brian made eye contact with the boy making the balloons, the boy said,"How are you today sir?" Brian said, "You know I used to be into that when I was a kid, making balloons you know." The boy chuckled and continued down to the next table with kids.

Brian went home, it was 8:43 p.m. he walked in the door, two minutes passed, and the mysterious clock started making its normal daily melody, the melody was different everyday, and always started at 8:45. Brian just kept the clock in his house. It'd been making the same noise for nearly 20 years now.

A month went by and he went to the same restaurant where the boy with the balloons was before. The boy had returned and was making balloons for all of the kids again. Brian was excited to see the young boy again; he wore the same Dr. Seuss type outfit, and had a smile on his face as he made each and every one of the kids happy.

The boy walked up to Brian and said, "Hi my name is Tyler, what's yours?" Brian reciprocated his regards and told him his name. Brian asked the young boy if he'd teach him how to make balloon animals. The boy told him yes. They set up a date and time. They were going to meet at one of Brian's favorite sea food restaurants he liked going to.

Tyler drove 20 minutes and got off at the exit of the restaurant, there were rocks on the side of the road, large piles of rocks hiding half of the view of the bay that could be seen. The sunshine was out, and the air smelled of salt and sea. The Sunshine radiated, and there were couples walking up and down the sidewalk enjoying the fresh air and the bay. A guy held a fishing pole and there was a fish on the end of the line wiggling trying to get set free. Tyler arrived at the sea food restaurant, he was hungry.

He opened the door of the restaurant; the restaurant had a huge wooden crab on the front of it. As he entered the restaurant people were dining outside in the sunshine, and some people were inside. He looked around for Brian and couldn't see him, he veered his eyes up a small set of stairs in the restaurant and there was Brian.

Brian motioned to Tyler where he was sitting. Tyler sat down. The waitress came buy, she had beautiful blue eyes, had long hair, brown in color. She had her hair tied up in bun, and said, "Can I take your order?"

Brian told Tyler, "This is on me today." Tyler had seen a crab sandwich special when he walked into the seafood restaurant, he ordered this.

"So how was your day today Brian?" asked Tyler. "Oh not too bad just watched the news, and did suduku puzzles for a few hours."

Brian and Tyler continued gabbing.

"Tyler why don't you follow me home, that way you'll know where I live in case you ever want to hang out again." Tyler nodded his head and followed Brian to his house.

Brian lived in a middle class neighborhood, he pulled into his driveway, and Tyler pulled up beside him. They exited there cars and proceeded to walk into Brian's house. They entered the house, it was cluttered and smelled a little putrid, there were books scattered throughout the house and electronic devices like turn tables and keyboards taking up space on all of the available tables in Brian's home.

"Oh you like music huh?" asked Tyler. "Actually I love music! It's one of my favorite facets of life." Brian walked Tyler over to a book shelf full of cds. Tyler saw lots of Beethoven and Mozart discs. He also saw the Dvd disc "The Incredibles." "Oh I've always wanted to see that movie but have never seen it." Brian felt generous with his items, and said, "Oh you can borrow it if you wish."

Tyler said "No that's ok." Tyler didn't know Brian that well yet and didn't want to take advantage of Brian's personal belongings.

Brian walked Tyler into his living room, there were a bunch of magazines scattered over a table. "Ya look at this clock; I got it for my 30 year anniversary at the company I worked for." Tyler stood there with his mouth wide open in awe at the clock.

"What, what is it?" asked Brian. "That clock, I have a netflix account and watch all of the old Unsolved Mysteries, and that picture of the girl on the swing was in one of the episodes." Tyler walked up to the clock; there was a latch on the right side of the picture that Brian had never opened. Tyler unlatched it, and opened the picture of the girl on the swing, that now was a little door and not just a picture. Inside of the door was a pamphlet with papers attached.

"You see, this clock has a device in it that gets a satellite to beam down digital data to it so that it plays a song every day at 8:45. Dominique Vee was a crazy scientist that had a theory about a gene called P21, also known as the "Fountain of Youth" gene, the gene when altered would allow it to repair and heal all of the sick and dying genes in everyone's body. He hid the theories in this specially constructed clock. All of Dominique Vee's theories are credited in this paperwork. He stored the theories in this clock that had never been found and was lost in existence. In the Unsolved Mysteries, it stated that if these theories of Dominique Vee were correct that it could save humans and allow humans to live for extended periods of time. It was not known how long though, or what affects it would have on the human race.

A mother and her son lay on a porch swing, the swing moved forwards, and backwards. The sunshine was out but about to go down. There was a huge field in front of the son and her boy. A finch was feeding her babies with a little maggot she'd found under a pile of boards in the field. The maggot was ripped to shreds as the baby finches devoured the maggot.

"Mommy when is Daddy coming home?"

"It's been the same time everyday honey for many years, He'll be home soon."

"I'm excited about my birthday, how old am I going to be again?"

"Let's see your daddy was 38 when he had you, and now he's 1238, you'll be 1200 years old."

The boy and her mother watched as the sun set in the distance on the field
